Robert McJannett faces a possible 15 year jail term for allegedly importing drugs to BaliA Perth man could be jailed for 15 years after allegedly importing less than two grams of marijuana into Bali.

Robert McJannett, 48, was arrested at Denpasar airport in December after Customs officers allegedly found the substance in his luggage.

He has appeared in the local district court charged with two offences, including importing drugs.

Outside court McJannett said he is not familiar with Indonesian laws.

"As far as I know, in my country, five grams of marijuana is legal. I didn't know what the law was here," he said.

It is understood he is the first Australian to face Indonesia's tough new drug laws.

The trial was adjourned until next Tuesday.
